"I am pleased to share my reflections on my professional relationship with Dr. Shermila Jayasinghe, both as my mentor during my Master of Nurse Practitioner (Diabetes) studies at Flinders University and as a colleague at Bairnsdale Regional Health Service.

Dr. Shermila’s mentorship has been invaluable. She has consistently been available, offering her time, expertise, and guidance to support my growth in this next phase of my career. Her extensive knowledge and experience have enriched my learning and development, helping me enhance my assessment, diagnostic, and clinical decision-making skills.

Through her positive communication and encouragement, Dr. Shermila has helped me overcome self-limiting beliefs and grow into the practitioner I aspire to be. Her ability to provide constructive feedback and teach best practices has been instrumental in shaping my approach to holistic, evidence-based, person-centered care.

"I met Dr. Shermila Jayasinghe approximately four years ago after moving to Bairnsdale, when she took over my care for Type 2 Diabetes, which developed following chemotherapy for breast cancer. Over the years, she has provided exceptional support, not only for my diabetes but also for other physical and mental health issues.

Dr. Shermila has been instrumental in managing my diabetes and recently helped me uncover the cause of my long-standing chronic insomnia.

Her kindness, compassion, and genuine holistic approach to patient care set her apart. She is the only medical professional I have complete confidence in since moving to Bairnsdale. Her guidance, knowledge, and unwavering support have significantly improved my quality of life, and I know she will excel in her new endeavors.

I wholeheartedly recommend Dr. Shermila as a compassionate and knowledgeable professional who truly cares for her patients."

"I was diagnosed with lupus in 2010 and met Dr. Shermila Jayasinghe a year later. From the very beginning, she went beyond just being a doctor—she became a true friend. Her kindness, empathy, and ability to connect on a personal level made me feel genuinely cared for. Even during my most critical moments in the ICU, she was there, supporting my family and coordinating with the medical team.

Dr. Shermila is an exceptional doctor who provides clear, compassionate advice and goes the extra mile to ensure her patients’ well-being. She’s not only brilliant but also deeply understanding, making it easy to share even sensitive concerns. I am forever grateful for her guidance and care and wholeheartedly recommend her to anyone seeking a dedicated and compassionate doctor."

2nd year nursing undergraduate – RMIT Australia

I met Shermila at work.I faced problems that I couldn't handle and had dreams that remained unfulfilled. I dreamed of earning a degree , but have given up due to personal circumstances. There were days I felt disappointed and powerless of my self.In difficult times, Shermila’s guidance, advice, and positive encouragement made a significant difference for me. She encouraged me to be the best version of myself and it breathed new life into my unfulfilled dream. Whenever we had a discussion, she motivated me to study nursing.

her continuous motivation ignited a fire within me, pushing me to pursue my dream relentlessly. As a result, I’m a second-year nursing student graduating next year. I still can’t believe how I decided to study nursing. I'm so grateful to my mentor Shermila for her words of encouragement. Her guidance illuminated the path ahead for me.Based on my experience, I recommend Shermila as a knowledgeable coach and mentor to help shape your success story.May my story serve as a guiding light for those striving for success!

Dr. EP GP trainee Tasmania

I met Shermila as a junior doctor working in Bairnsdale, in East Gippsland!Shermila contributed to improve availability of specialist services and equitable healthcare to regional Australia. I, along with my fellow juniors, were very thankful for her supervision and guidance, in both professional and personal matters We saw her regularly as a rostered consultant during rounds and throughout the day, but she also never hesitated in providing guidance even if we were not part of her current team, or even if she was working in outpatient clinics. She was always willing to spare a few minutes on the phone or face-to-face!As a junior, knowing that she was always willing to help provided an ongoing sense of reassurance in our daily work. She also provided insights into our future careers and encouraged us to persevere.

I think when we first encountered her, we saw that it was possible to remain kind and relatable even as a senior in leadership position – which was inspiring!she is always generous with her time and never turned anyone away – I think essential in ensuring that someone’s intentions and needs are fully understood and addressed, regardless of the outcome.

Dr. Dunya Luke

Locum Consultant in Neurology ,
West Suffolk NHS Foundation Trust, UK

I first met Shermila back in 2014 and have had the privilege of knowing her for over 10 years now. She was one of my senior colleagues during my internship as a first-year doctor in Sri Lanka. Our interactions began in the medical field, where she not only guided me in patient care but also played a significant role in shaping my career.

The first year as a doctor was one of the most challenging times in my life. Adjusting to a demanding work environment, managing patients on a hectic schedule, and working long hours felt overwhelming. However, whenever Shermila came to the ward with her warm smile, I felt supported and encouraged. Her presence helped me build confidence, improve my attitude, and set ambitious career goals for myself. I consider myself incredibly fortunate to have met her early in my career, as she has been a major influence in helping me become the professional I am today.

One breakthrough moment that stands out was when Shermila helped me realize the importance of setting boundaries in both my personal and professional life. As a junior doctor, I rarely took time off, even in the most difficult circumstances. I vividly remember the day my grandfather passed away. I was emotionally drained but still dragged myself to work, hesitant to ask for leave. Shermila recognized what I was going through and guided me to make the right decision. That moment was transformative, it completely shifted my perspective. I came to understand how the lack of boundaries was depleting my energy and holding me back. Her guidance empowered me to prioritize myself without guilt, bringing much-needed peace and balance into my life.

I wholeheartedly recommend Shermila’s mentorship and coaching to anyone. She is one of the most remarkable individuals I have ever met, with an exceptional ability to inspire and guide others. Her dedication and capacity to uplift those around her are truly awe-inspiring, and I am forever grateful for the impact she has had on my life and career.

I have started working as a junior doctor in Australia in 2024 and I first met Shermila when I was doing observer ship in Bairnsdale Hospital. She is one of my supervisors in Medicine in the hospital. I was fascinated to see her passion for patient care as well providing teaching and guidance for junior doctors. I have been looking for guidance for my career pathway as I’m new to the health system in Australia. During my term discussion I expressed my concern and Shermila mentioned her mentoring programme. I am deeply grateful for the time and effort she has invested in mentoring me over last one year. Her guidance has been a guiding light in my career which has empowered me to see a possible future and believe it can be obtained. Shermila is a mentor who knows when to listen, when to advise and when to let you soar. I strongly recommend her mentorship programme and thank you shermila for being not just a mentor but a source of strength and inspiration.
